How to Choose Social Media Consultants

If you are looking to get your company on Facebook or you want to know the difference between a #hashtag and a RT, you may want to speak to a social media consultant first. But not so fast! The term "social media expert" is used by thousands of self-proclaimed gurus, ninjas and superstars. And they seem to lurk under every digital rock. Is it possible to be a social media expert when you consider that Facebook is only seven years old? How many seven year olds are experts at anything? Still, if you don't know your Twitter feed from your Facebook wall, you may want to bring in someone who can explain it to you and help you make sense of it all.

There are no failsafe ways to ensure you are actually talking to an expert. However, there are some things you can do to give yourself a better snapshot of the person you are talking to.

Nothing replaces doing your own research. I recommend that you at least understand the basics. Go online and research how the various social media outlets work. For example, Twitter is much different than Facebook, which is much different from Digg, which is much different than blogging. Here are some basic things to ask yourself about the social media consultants you are interested in.

If they're a Twitter expert, how many followers do they have? Looking at their profile easily checks this. Their "followers" and "following" numbers should be relatively close. If they have more following than followers, then they probably aren't a Twitter "Guru". Also, check how often they tweet and if their tweets are relevant information. Anyone can tweet gibberish. All you have to do is click a button.

If they're a Facebook expert, have they run promotions on the platform? Facebook can be a wonderful tool for keeping in touch with old friends. I know plenty of experts who know how to do that. However, using Facebook for business purposes means understanding how to attract new members as well as how to run successful Facebook promotions. If you're a business owner, you will want to know how to use it for your online presence.

If they are an all-around expert, do they have examples of multi-platform campaigns which they've created to attract and invite brand engagement from their prospective customers? Do they understand how to drive promotions, advertise and create brand loyalists? Do they have a blog? If so, are they blogging about social media and offering advice oh how to best use it for business? Have they written extensively on online promotions, consulting, graphic design, social media, or any other subject that involves being a social media "expert"?

While it's easy to call yourself a social media expert, it is far more difficult to prove it by showing examples of what an "expert" has done in the past. As with any consulting proposition, it's important for you to do your homework before hiring anyone.
