Taking Crowdsourcing to a New Level

more Video Reports

Hi. This is Enzo F. Cesario with another edition of the Brandsplat Video Report. Everybody's talking about crowd-sourcing these days. We're here today with Scott Wurtele, founder of Idea Connection, who's got a different angle on crowd-sourcing. How are you doing Scott.

SCOTT: Fine, thank you, Enzo.

ENZO: Do you want to tell us a little bit about Idea Connection?

SCOTT: Certainly. Idea Connection is taking the power of many to solve corporate challenges, mostly for Fortune 500 companies.

ENZO: So how is this different than just crowd-sourcing something on Twitter or getting a bunch of people together on social media?

SCOTT: Those are excellent ways of getting ideas, of getting people together, and getting feedback or survey. What we do is, we do that as well as put teams together.

ENZO: What kind of teams?

SCOTT: Problem solving teams. What happens is a corporation will give us a challenge. We'll send out invitations to about a thousand people who we have crowd-sourced. We have many thousands of problem solvers in our database who are members of Idea Connection. We send out an invitation to them and then we go through a selection process -- people and software are involved in this process -- and we put together a diverse team, or several diverse teams, to work on the corporate challenge.

ENZO: So this is like crowd-sourcing but without the fat?

SCOTT: It's crowd-sourcing minus the problem of crowd-sourcing, which is no tuning, too much junk -- it just brings the whole level of quality up; it takes the best of crowd-sourcing.

ENZO: That's great. So how do you market your service?

SCOTT: Quality content. Our site is full. It's got thirty thousand pages of information about inventions, innovations, intellectual property to buy and sell; there are a hundred interviews with a hundred different authors who have all written in the innovation field; interviews with problem solvers; stories of successful outsourcing -- as a beginning.

ENZO: So if I'm doing a search -- let's say I'm an inventor and I'm looking to patent my idea -- I might come across your content.

SCOTT: Yes. People, inventors, do every hour. We allow those people, if they wish, to pay a small fee to put their invention on our site. And with over a million visitors a year and several million page-reads a year, they do get traction; they do get leads to sell their invention, or to get funding, or to find the intellectual property they want. That's not our main thrust, but it happens on our website, and it attracts the quality problem solvers that we're after.

ENZO: Wow. Do you work with smaller companies too, or just Fortune 500?

SCOTT: Absolutely. As small as one person and as big as ninety thousand.

ENZO: You heard it here. If you have a great idea and you need to solve a problem, or you have an invention, go to Idea Connection and Scott Wurtele can help you out. Thanks for talking with us today, Scott.

SCOTT: You're very welcome. Thanks a lot.

ENZO: This is Enzo Cesario. See you next time.
